The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) released the Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). The LNG Cybersecurity Framework, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER), will help industry partners manage and reduce cyber risks at all stages of the LNG lifecycle, from the liquefaction process through distribution. It is an application of the broader NIST Cybersecurity Framework within the LNG industry.

A vital energy source, natural gas is usually delivered through pipelines in the United States but can be liquified for transportation in tankers to ports and terminals domestically and abroad. The maritime transportation of LNG involves a complex set of stakeholders and distinct cybersecurity considerations for the digital control systems that manage operations on ships and at terminals.

NIST and CESER, in collaboration with experts from the LNG industry, developed the LNG Cybersecurity Framework as part of an inter-agency agreement to develop tools and research to strengthen the cybersecurity of maritime transportation systems within the energy sector relating to LNG. CESER is proud to support this release as it reflects a successful collaboration to enhance the U.S. energy infrastructure security both on land and at sea.
